Ypsilanti Fall River Day Overview

Come enjoy the reflection of the fall colors in our Huron River in Ypsilanti on Sunday, September 24. 2017. Fall River Day consists of exhibits and programs from 12 noon until 3pm in Ypsilanti’s Riverside Park (north end, entrance on Cross Street just east of Huron Street) along with canoe trips on the Huron River.

Programs and exhibits at Ypsi Fall River Day will be presented by the Huron River Watershed Council, Leslie Science Center (giving a “Birds Of Prey” show), Shultz Outfitters (presenting a program on fly-fishing on the Huron River), “History On The Huron” talks by local historian James Mann with more programs to be added. Also the Ypsilanti Township Parks & Recreation Department will offer interactive games and other activities for families from noon to 3pm.

For the Ypsi River Day kayak trips, the City of Ann Arbor Canoe Livery will start kayak trips from the north end of Frog Island Park (adjacent to, and a five minute walk from, Riverside Park).

Programs

  • 12pm, “Walk to Frog Island Park” with Elizabeth Riggs of the Huron River Watershed Council. Elizabeth will share the new improvements made to the canoe launch at Frog Island Park and community efforts to restore and feature the river in Ypsilanti through RiverUp! and the Huron River Water Trial initiative.

  • 12:30pm, "History on the Huron" by local historian James Mann.

  • 1pm, “River Raptors” birds of prey as seen along the Huron by the Leslie Science & Nature Center.

  • 2pm, “Nature Walk Along the B2B” with Parks Naturalist Shawn Severance of Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation.

Kayak Trips

Paddle the Huron River as it winds through Ypsilanti into Ford Lake. Launch from Frog Island Park anytime Noon to 3pm. Catch our shuttle back to Frog Island Park from a designated downstream takeout on the hour 1-4pm.  $10 for a single kayak; $15 for a two-person kayak. Trip guides will be on hand for beginners. Price includes all equipment and transportation. Walk up registration. Paddle Ypsi trips are limited availability, first come-first served and depend on river conditions.

  • Participants should arrive at the north end of Ypsilanti’s Frog Island Park (off Rice Street, just south of Forest Avenue) at least 20 minutes prior to a kayak trip departure time.

  • Kayak trips are first come, first served.

  • Kayak rentals include paddles and life vests.

  • Suggested items to bring along include bottles of water, rain gear, snacks.

  • Fees for the kayak trip (payable at the day of the event by credit card, cash or check) will be $10 for a single kayak or $15 for a tandem kayak. Those renting must have a photo ID.
